A visit to Doncaster wouldn’t be complete without a day at the races. Doncaster has always embraced the wealthy stagecoach trade from around the 16th century. This led to horses being bred here, which led to horse races being started here. The earliest important race in Doncaster’s history was the Doncaster Gold Cup, first run over Cantley Common in 1766. The Doncaster Cup is the oldest continuing, regulated horserace in the world.
There is plenty going on at night as well. Whether you want a night on the town or a trip to the theatre, Doncaster has it all. If you have had your teeth whitened and want to show them off there is a live music venue with a late night bar, at the Diamond Live Lounge. If you want to dazzle at the theatre there is a whole calendar of events at Cast, the Doncaster Dome or Doncaster Little Theatre.
Doncaster has a rich history dating back to Roman times. In medieval times in the 9th century Doncaster was one of the 28 cities of Britain. By 1334 Doncaster was the wealthiest town in southern Yorkshire, and the 6th most important town in Yorkshire as a whole. The Medieval town of Doncaster is known to have been protected by earthen ramparts and ditches with four gates as entrances to the town. These gates are still commemorated today. Traditionally Doncaster has always been a prosperous town. The area was renowned for rich landowners and vast estates. Evidence of this wealth remains in the luxurious and historic gilded 18th century Mansion House located on the High Street.
